    Nic Meets His In-laws

    12-14-04
Hollywood hardman Nicolas Cage showed his more sensitive side when he journeyed to South Korea at the weekend. The Oscar-winner, who jetted into the country to meet the parents and family of his new wife Alice Kim, made quite an impression when he stepped out in traditional Korean dress for a photoshoot in Seoul. The actor, who was also in town to promote his new movie National Treasure, seemed to be much taken with the country. "Korea is very meaningful for me because I have family here," he said. "That is really the most important aspect of my trip because it's about people I will know for the rest of my life."

And the 40-year-old was likewise eager to praise the eastern nation's culture and cuisine. "Kimchi (a spicy vegetable dish) is good for my spirit and my mind. It keeps me balanced; it keeps me whole," he revealed. "But I am most impressed with the respect for the ancestors, the family, and traditions. I think there is a lot we can learn in the United States from the great and magnificent way you respect one another and your family."

When asked how he was finding married life the actor said he was content to take things day by day, though he also alluded to the possibility of starting a family sometime soon. "Right now, Yong-gyong (Kim's Korean name) and I are just trying to enjoy our time together because our marriage is still so young and so new," he explained. "I would love to have children. It would be nice to have kids running around during Christmas time."

**After leaving Korea, the couple paid a visit to Taiwan, where they received an equally enthusiastic welcome**

'Kimchi Is in My Spirit,' Nicolas Cage Says
    12-13-04
    By Kim Hyun
SEOUL, Dec. 13 (Yonhap) -- Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage expressed a strong attachment to Korea on Monday, calling the homeland of his wife a "part of my home" that has food he likes and values he admires. "I wasn't really able to enjoy vegetables until I discovered Korean vegetables. Kimchi is in my spirit and in my mind, it balances my soul," Cage, 40, said, referring to Korea's spicy pickled vegetables during a press conference in Seoul.

    007??
Hollywood star Nicolas Cage has laughed off reports he's been lined up as a possible James Bond replacement for Pierce Brosnan, insisting only British actors can fill the role. At the British premiere of his latest film National Treasure, Cage admitted playing 007 would be a dream role, but he has no realistic chance of starring as the superspy.

Cage said: "That's the thing - there's no way an American will ever be allowed to play James Bond. You can have a Brit play Batman but you can't have an American play Bond, that will never happen. "As much as I'd love to, I will never be invited to that party."

    Nic wants more kids..
Newly married NICOLAS CAGE has hinted he would like to have children with his new wife ALICE KIM. The CON AIR star, who wed 20-year-old Kim in July (04), shares joint custody of his 12-year-old son WESTON with former girlfriend KRISTINA FULTON.

But he is getting broody in the run-up to Christmas. Cage says, "I always think that Christmas is a time for children - the lights in their eyes and the glows on their faces. So I guess I might try to hire some this year."

    Nic's a good singer
    12-10-04
British actor Sean Bean was impressed by Nicolas Cage's singing talents when they got to know each other on the set of their latest film National Treasure. Bean, 45, admits he is not musically inclined and needs alcohol before he'll pick up the microphone, but he recognised Cage's skills.

The Lord of the Rings actor says, "We were having a great time doing karaoke and all sorts together. "Nic's a good singer, he sung a lot of Elvis and old songs and stuff like that. "He threw this massive karaoke party - it was like a massive banquet with loads of food and drink on, and we just went at it for hours.

"I've just discovered that my singing voice is alright, well it sounded alright that night but we'd had about four pints of lager."

    Cage fends off SpongeBob challenge
    11-22-04
Nicolas Cage made his blockbuster comeback at the weekend with his new family film, National Treasure, opening at the top of the US box office with takings of more than £25 million. Hot on his heels was that other great American movie star, SpongeBob Squarepants, who made a splash by bringing in about £24 million. The Incredibles continued its incredible run with a third place finish and another £18 million to make its overall gross so far to £135 million.

Tom Hanks had another disappointing weekend with The Polar Express, which cost more than £130 million to make, adding a lukewarm £10 million to its total. Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason didn't do particularly well, either, taking about £7 million to come in at number five. National Treasure is Cage's fourth collaboration with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and centres on a plot to steal the Declaration of Independence to obtain the hidden clues to a colossal fortune stashed by the founding fathers.

Sold as an action film for kids, it was said to have fared well with children and their parents. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is the first big-screen adventure for the cheery sponge who lives among his aquatic pals. Critics liked the film's cheery message and it is likely to do well next weekend, which is part of America's Thanksgiving holiday.

Flick puts Cage back in action
    1-15-04
He hunts for buried loot in fast-paced 'National Treasure'

    BY TERRY LAWSON
What initially made Nicolas Cage apprehensive about "National Treasure" is also what intrigued him. 'National Treasure' Opens Friday. Read Terry Lawson's review in Friday's Free Press. Remembering the pitch he got for the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced action-adventure film, Cage says director Jon Turteltaub started something like this: " 'OK, it's about this treasure hunter who steals the Declaration of Independence.' And I say, 'Uh, OK. Could that be done?' And he says, 'Oh yeah, but what about this: You steal it while wearing a tuxedo.'

"And of course, I'm thinking Cary Grant in 'To Catch a Thief,' or Jimmy Stewart or David Niven, a sort of throwback caper. And 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' without any of the supernatural stuff or Nazis. Fast-paced, with a light touch, no real violence. Far-fetched, wild. And I realize I'm talking myself into it, because, I'm like a lot of moviegoers. Sometimes, I just want to have fun." If Cage is just rationalizing or -- as is more likely -- doing a sell job on his interviewer, he puts it over the same way he has in his previous Bruckheimer movies, including "The Rock" and "Con Air," movies that could serve as examples of the decline of cinema if they weren't so ridiculously entertaining.

Nicolas Cage gets back in action
    11-13-04
Actor stars in National Treasure Portrays a historian on adventure mission ANGELA DAWSON SPECIAL TO THE STAR HOLLYWOOD—Nicolas Cage admits he's always had a fascination with treasure hunting.

As a youngster, his grandmother gave him money for his birthday and, instead of spending it, Cage buried the loot in the backyard only to dig it up later when he was certain no one else was around. "I guess you could call that strange, if you think about it," he says. Strange? Perhaps. But hardly surprising. After all, Cage's obsessions and quirks have been well documented in the media over the years. Blame it on his genes. Born into a creative family — his grandfather was the late composer Carmine Coppola, his uncle is legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and his cousins include actor Jason Schwartzman and director Sofia Coppola — it appeared inevitable that Cage (who changed his name from Coppola so as not to trade on his family name) would also become a celebrated artist.

Cage made his professional acting debut in the 1981 TV movie The Best Of Times. With a lanky body, hangdog expression and slow, monotone voice, he was a natural for comedy. But Cage also possessed a darker edge that his celebrated uncle noticed when he cast him in the supporting role of Smoky, Matt Dillon's lieutenant, in the gang drama, Rumble Fish. He again worked with his uncle on the ill-fated gangster epic The Cotton Club as well as the hit comedy Peggy Sue Got Married. Over the years, Cage has shown his talents in a variety of genres, from comedies like Moonstruck, Raising Arizona and Honeymoon In Vegas to serious dramas, like Birdy and his Oscar-winning performance in Leaving Las Vegas. "I'm always trying to rediscover myself and my work in film so I never get calcified or trapped," he says in a hotel suite overlooking West Los Angeles. "I'll find some new sound or image or expression that will be exciting for me and, hopefully, other people."

Cage has tackled live action-heroes, most notably in his films with action producer Jerry Bruckheimer — The Rock, Con Air and Gone In 60 Seconds. He again joins Bruckheimer on the new Disney action caper National Treasure, directed by his old classmate Turteltaub. It opens next Friday. Cage portrays a historian on a mission to uncover one of the world's most sought-after treasures: a cache of artefacts dating from ancient Egypt to early Christianity. In this movie, which is part heist, part romantic adventure, part history lesson, Cage's hero tries to evade both the law and the bad guys as he uncovers each clue. Jon Voight, Harvey Keitel, Sean Bean and Diane Kruger co-star. Cage says he had fun making the film, which appealed to his longstanding fascination with treasure hunting. He and his co-stars bonded offscreen as well as on, even going out to sing karaoke together. Twice divorced, Cage created a stir this summer when he married Alice Kim, a 20-year-old sushi bar waitress.

"I don't want to say I'm happy — that's too fragile a word," he says, when asked about his life. "I'm definitely content and I'm hopeful about the future. Although I spend most of my time thinking about the present." ENTERTAINMENT NEWS WIRE

Nicolas Cage Shows Off His Romantic Treasure
    9 NOVEMBER 2004

Nicolas Cage's new wife Alice looked every inch the Hollywood starlet when she took to the red carpet with her husband on Monday. The 20-year-old, who was working as a waitress until she met the actor, was arm-in-arm with her leading man at the premiere of National Treasure in Los Angeles.

Alice's life hasn't been the same since she met Nic at the sushi bar she was working in last year. She got a taste of the Hollywood lifestyle immediately after their wedding, when he whisked her away to the Big Apple for an extravagant spending spree.

And the Ocar winner continued to lavish gifts on the Korean-American beauty two months later when filming on his latest movie brought him to London. According to newspaper reports, the 40-year-old spent £80,000 on designer clothes and accessories for his new bride during the three-day visit.

Nic and Alice made their vows in a small private ceremony in California last July. It was the actor's third trip down the aisle: he had previously been married to Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa Marie and his Bringing Out The Dead co-star Patricia Arquette. The performer's loved ones seem to think his latest relationship will stand the test of time, though. "They're a good fit," says older brother Marc. "Definitely. I think this will last."

When Mr. Brando brought his strengths to the right part -- for instance, the brooding, anguished ex-prizefighter who blows the whistle on union corruption in On the Waterfront -- the results were more than electric. He seemed to be creating a new iconography of American manhood -- an existential tough guy, a rock with doubts and feelings. And even when he misapplied his Method -- to parts that demanded more restraint and classicism, such as Marc Antony in Julius Caesar (1953) and Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls (1955) -- the performances still carried the live-wire charge of something unwieldy and original. In the 1970s, a new generation of actors rose up on Mr. Brando's shoulders: Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, James Caan. The 1980s brought another set of Brando emulators: Sean Penn, Nicolas Cage, Robert Downey Jr., Ed Harris. As recently as last weekend, with the fine young actor Ryan Gosling in The Notebook, Mr. Brando's influence was still omnipresent.

The ice thaws between Penn and Cage!
    3-22-04
THE ice thaws between Penn and Cage! Sean Penn and Nicolas Cage, 40, who appeared together in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Racing with the Moon, used to be close friends. But about five years ago Penn, 43, was quoted on more than one occasion publicly denigrating Cage's choice of roles. He made comments like, He's "appalled when talented actors debase themselves" and "Nic Cage is not an actor. He could be again, but now he's more like a... performer", reports the Star.

This led to a cold war between Cage and Penn but on the Oscar night the ice finally broke. During Penn's best actor acceptance speech he mentioned not only the other nominees whom he felt were deserving of the statuette but also actors who weren't even nominated, including Nicolas Cage. According to a source, Penn and Cage met up later that night at the Vanity Fair post-Oscar bash, where they got "choked up and hugged for several minutes." According to the report, they also vowed to never again let anything get in the way of their friendship, which the source says, "has been repaired and rekindled." (ANI)

    Sad Day For The Coppola's
    1-23-04
Italia Pennino Coppola, mother of filmmaker and winemaker Francis Ford Coppola and a former resident of San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood, died Wednesday of natural causes at her home in Los Angeles.

She was 91. Mrs. Coppola, affectionately called "Mammarella" -- "dear little mama" in Italian -- by her family and friends, was known for her Italian cooking and for kindling the creative spark in her family. In addition to Francis, she is also the mother of actress Talia Shire and grandmother of actor Nicolas Cage and actress Sofia Coppola. "In a family of artists, she brought the magic to our family's creativity, '' said Francis Coppola, as he recalled his mother's childlike enthusiasm and love of the make-believe.

"She had a young girl's style until the end. Even at 91,'' he said. "It was like she never aged beyond an 18-year-old.'' When Francis was 16 and the family lived in Long Island, he recalled, his mother nurtured his nascent interest in the theater by giving him money for Broadway matinees in Manhattan. "My father didn't really take my interest in the theater seriously,'' he said. "But my mother subsidized it.'' Mrs. Coppola, a homemaker, was also an exceptional cook of Italian food. And that legacy has been memorialized in the Francis Coppola Brands line of Mammarella pasta and sauces, whose packaging bears a photo of Mrs. Coppola at age 17. Mrs. Coppola also published a cookbook, "Mama Coppola's Pasta Book." She was best known for her calzone and braciole, Francis' favorite. He said he plans to cook the Italian beef rolls using his mother's recipe after her private memorial service.

She made two appearances -- both nonspeaking roles -- in two of Francis Coppola's films. In the recently re-released "One From the Heart,'' she and her husband played a couple in an elevator. And in "The Godfather, Part II,'' she played a body double in a coffin. Mrs. Coppola was born into a life of movies and music. She entered the world in 1912 above the family's Empire Theater in Brooklyn. Her father, popular Italian composer Francesco Pennino, who immigrated from Naples, Italy, was also an early importer of Italian films. She married flutist and Academy Award-winning composer Carmine Coppola and had three children: August Floyd Coppola, who lives in Savanna, Ga.; Francis, of San Francisco and Napa Valley; and Talia of Los Angeles. Her husband died in 1991. In addition to her three children, Mrs. Coppola is survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Private services will be held at an undisclosed location. Donations in her memory may be made to North Beach Citizens, a nonprofit group that helps the neighborhood's homeless. The address is: 720 Columbus Ave., San Francisco, CA 94133. ~Source~

    Sundance Film Festival
    1-16-04
PARK CITY — Every year, Sundance Film Festival officials promise to focus more on independent cinema than Hollywood stars. And every year the stars seem to overshadow the films. This year, however, the festival may make good on that promise, as one of the most celebrity-driven events has gone missing. The Tribute to Independent Vision award — which has been given annually for 12 years to high-profile actors who star in both independent and Hollywood movies — is nowhere to be found on this year's schedule. The award — which has brought Denzel Washington, Julianne Moore, Kevin Spacey, Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter and many others to Sundance — is being given at least a year off while officials give it a critical "rethink," according to festival director Geoff Gilmore.

"While I still believe in what it represents," Gilmore said, "I just think there are better ways of doing it." He added that this also means there will be one less sidebar event to distract audiences from the festival's full slate of screenings. "Look, I'm not telling people they can't go to watch the stars, but if that's all they're going to the festival for, they're missing out on a lot of quality films — films they might not ever see otherwise."

    Best chase ever?
    1-16-04
By Ed Harris, Evening Standard 15 January 2004 Steve McQueen's thrilling 10-minute car chase in Bullitt has been voted the best pursuit scene in cinema history.

The 1968 film's chase through the steep-hilled streets of San Francisco - with McQueen's Detective Frank Bullitt behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang GT 390 - was voted top in a poll of 5,500 film fans. The movie later inspired a TV advert.

In second place was Gone in 60 Seconds, a 1974 film remade in 2000 with Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie, in which the director, HB Halicki, also performed all his own stunts in a 40-minute pursuit.

Could Nicolas Cage be Pete Rose??
    1-9-04
BASEBALL'S ROGUE champ, Pete Rose, has, as you know, just published his autobiography containing his "sorta" mea culpa confession that, yes, he bet on baseball. Sports commentary for the most part insists Rose hasn't been humble and regretful enough to be allowed into the Hall of Fame, despite his record of achievement. Well, his legacy will always be tainted, whether he is in or out. He isn't the world's most engaging personality - just put him in and get it over with.

Anyway, Rose's story is now hot, and Hollywood is eager to option the book. Already, names like Matt Dillon, Brad Pitt and Nicolas Cage are being thrown around as those starry enough to eventually play Rose.
