    Nicolas Cage Files for Divorce
    11/26/02
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Actor Nicolas Cage has filed for divorce from Lisa Marie Presley less than four months after their romantic wedding in Hawaii. He cited irreconcilable differences. Just last weekend, the two appeared to be very much a twosome, putting in a joint appearance for a premiere of Cage's new movie, Adaptation.

Nicolas Cage To Sell More Comics
    Including Rare, Early Superman "Fanzine"
    11/26/02
(Dallas, TX) - There are a few more pages remaining in the Nicolas Cage superheroes saga, including the earliest known Superman comic. Four more of the Academy Award-winning actor's vintage comic books, not included in last month's $1.68 million sale of his collection, will be offered in an auction December 6. "The four comic books are science fiction 'fanzines' created in 1933 by Cleveland, Ohio teenagers, Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, the co-creators of Superman who formally appeared in a comic book in 1938. So, these 1933 publications are the earliest known portrayal of Superman," explained John Petty, Director of Heritage Comics Auctions of Dallas, Texas. Fanzines are rudimentary, fan-created magazines that often contain more text than illustrations.

"In one of their fanzines Siegel and Schuster wrote and drew the story, 'The Reign of the Superman,' that is considered a precursor to their eventual creation of Superman as we know him today. Another of their fanzines contained the first printed image of King Kong," said Petty. The group of four rare publications from actor Cage's collection will be part of an anticipated multi-million auction sale of comic books, comic art, and movie posters taking place on December 6 and 7 by Heritage Comics Auctions in Dallas. Why weren't these items included in the record setting October 10 auction of Cage's other comic books? "They arrived too late to be included in the catalog. Sometimes even Superman gets delayed by the mail," said Petty. Heritage is the world's largest collectibles auctioneer with auction sales of more than $70 million in 2001, and expected auction sales of about $90 million for 2002. Nicolas Cage Quits Smoking
    10/28/02
After playing on the overseas film-festival circuit, Nicolas Cage's directorial debut, the movie "Sonny," came home to America Saturday night with its premiere at the 15th Annual Virginia Film Festival, PEOPLE reports. "If any of you need anything during the screening, I'll be in the back having a panic attack and probably lying on a gurney because I just quit smoking," the "Leaving Las Vegas" Oscar winner, 38, told the crowd when he introduced the film. Cage arrived at the University of Virginia's Culbreth Theatre with new wife Lisa Marie Presley, 34, by his side. Presley wore a subdued black suit and spike-heeled boots, while Cage sported a black and white pinstriped suit, accented by an enormous Elvis-style green pinkie ring. Cage said that he and his uncle, experienced director Francis Ford Coppola, share only one similarity: "I remember seeing my uncle on set and hearing him say, 'ACT ... tion,' letting the 'tion' roll off his tongue much later, and I found myself adopting that style." The movie, whose leading man is James Franco (Harry Osborn in "Spider-Man"), revolves around a male hustler who joins the Army in order to get out of the gigolo business. Submitting to a post-premiere grilling session with Chicago Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert, Cage said he "was a little bit of a nervous wreck because it's the first time I've seen ('Sonny') with a live audience." Cage explained that it was "the combination of the threat of a writers strike and the screen actors walkout that made me think I would have to shift gears creatively" and try his hand at directing. "I see myself very much as a student as an actor and now as a director. I think you have to not be afraid not to fall on your face to be a true artist," he said.

Nic Cage's directorial debut gets Oscar push
    10/17/02
Nicolas Cage's directorial debut has had its American release date brought forward to make it eligible for the Oscars. Sonny stars James Franco, who played Harry in Spider-Man, as well as Mena Suvari, Brenda Blethyn and Harry Dean Stanton. The film is the story of a male gigolo (Franco) who struggles to free himself from his madame mother (Blethyn) to make a better life. "We know that we are somewhat of an underdog, but we are so proud of this film and of the work the cast and everyone involved has put into the project," Cage tells www.variety.com. Sonny will open in the UK next year.

Cage awakening to lead 'Back Up' for Castle Rock
    9/26/02
Taking on a role reminiscent of his work in "Face/Off," Nicolas Cage is attached to star in "Back Up," a Tom Vaughan-penned spec that has been acquired by Castle Rock Pictures.

A science fiction thriller described as "Memento" meets "Face/Off," the project will star Cage as a cop who is brought back to life to investigate his own murder. It is being produced by the Jacobson Co.'s Tom Jacobson and Jim Wedaa in conjunction with Saturn Films' Cage and Norm Golightly. The project was brought into Castle Rock by Liz Glotzer and Martin Schaffer.

Based on a story by Vaughan and Wedaa, "Back Up" is set in the near future, when technology allows for the resuscitation of humans and the "backing up" of their memories onto a computer. Cage plays a cop who gets "backed-up" and wakes up 90 days later with a gap in his memory. Learning that he was murdered and his wife has left him, Cage's character is intent on hunting down his murderer and figuring out what he did during the missing days that ruined his life.

" 'Back Up' explores a really complex character in the middle of what is essentially a high-concept science fiction thriller, and it is a great role for Nic Cage," Wedaa said.

Golightly echoed Wedaa's sentiments, stressing the unique concept. " 'Back Up' is an incredibly unique piece of material -- both thought-provoking and entertaining from beginning to end," he said.

Cage, who stars in the upcoming drama "Adaptation," recently premiered his directorial debut, "Sonny," at the Deauville Festival of American Cinema. Through Saturn Films, Cage also produced the upcoming "The Life of David Gale," which stars Kevin Spacey. Cage and Saturn are repped by CAA, manager Gerry Harrington and attorneys Jake Bloom, Patrick Knapp and Steven Brookman.

Vaughan most recently wrote "Nine Lives," which is set up at Millennium with Marcos Siega directing. It also is being produced by Jacobson and Wedaa. Vaughan is repped by ICM and Tavel Entertainment.

Jacobson and Wedaa recently produced and executive produced the Barry Sonnenfeld comedy "Big Trouble" and are executive producing the pilot "Fixxer" for MTV. The Jacobson Co. also is producing the upcoming Coen brothers comedy "Ladykillers."

John Woo tested actors in new film
    8/30/02
John Woo says he wanted to make the action in his new film as real as possible. Windtalkers stars Nicolas Cage and Christian Slater and is released in the UK today. Woo says for some of the film's sequences he didn't tell the actors what was coming. "I wanted to capture the true expressions of the actors, so I had to use a lot of hand-held camera to follow them into battle. "I also set quite a few big bombs close to the actors, and sometimes I wouldn't let them know where they were. Some of the moments must have been pretty real for them. "I wanted this film to be taken a little more seriously, almost like a documentary," said Woo. "I also wanted the audience to feel like they're inside a battlefield, and to let them witness the violence and horror in war."

    Cage, others sued over 'Sonny'
    8/28/02
LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Television writer Robert Dellinger has filed a copyright-infringement lawsuit against Intermedia Films, Nicolas Cage and four other entertainment companies regarding the upcoming film "Sonny," which Cage directed. In his suit, filed Tuesday in Los Angeles federal court, Dellinger alleges that he and screenwriter John Carlen -- also listed as a defendant -- co-wrote four separate screenplays in the 1970s that served as the basis for the "Sonny" screenplay, which Carlen sold to Intermedia. The suit alleges that Dellinger was left out of the deal despite the collaboration between himself and Carlen on the original script. The defendants include Intermedia Films, Vortex Pictures, Pony Rides, Gold Circle Films, Saturn Films, Carlen and Cage. Dellinger is seeking more than $2 million as well as an injunction to restrict the film from reaching the foreign market. According to Dellinger, the work on the scripts began in 1975 in federal prison on Terminal Island in Los Angeles at the Creative Writing Workshop, which Dellinger founded and at which he taught. Carlen attended the workshop while serving time for bank robbery, which was one in a series of prison stints for Carlen. "Sonny," which marks Cage's directorial debut, is about the struggles of a male prostitute who wants to get out of the hustling lifestyle. It stars James Franco in the title role alongside Brenda Blethyn and Mena Suvari and is set to premiere Friday at the Deauville Festival of American Film. Messages left at Intermedia Films were not returned. A Saturn Films representative declined comment. Messages left for Cage's publicist were unreturned.

    8/10/02
They were on, then they were off, and now they've both said "I do." In the surprise wedding of the summer, Lisa Marie Presley and Nicolas Cage tied the knot in Hawaii over the weekend. Only "Extra" can show you Cage and Presley walking down the aisle on the lawn at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel on the big island at 6:30 pm on Saturday night. Glamour magazine's Suzie Yalof Schwartz says it was an intimate sunset. Cage's son Weston was there. So were Lisa Marie's mom Priscilla, and her two children. This was 34-year-old Lisa Marie's third trip down the aisle. She was married to musician Danny Keough, the father of her kids, and of course who can forget her brief marriage to Michael Jackson. This is Cage's second time around having divorced actress Patricia Arquette in 2001. "Extra" has learned the happy couple reportedly left the island Sunday and returned to Los Angeles on Cage's private jet, where the Academy Award winning actor was back to work on the set of his latest film, "Matchstick Men." John Woo Looks to Cage, Chow Yun-Fat for Next Film
    7/25/2002
Hollywood director John Woo said today that he plans to ask Nicolas Cage and Chow Yun-Fat to star in his next film, which will be about foreign railway workers in the United States during the 19th century. Woo, famous for action flicks such as Hard-Boiled, The Killer, and Mission: Impossible 2, said the movie would mark a departure from his established style. China-born Woo, who started his film career in Hong Kong, said Land of Destiny would center around Chinese and Irish railway workers in the United States. "Among them are cultural clashes and racial problems, but eventually they become good friends and build their dreams," Woo told a news conference in Hong Kong. Chow, a household name in Asia, shot to fame for his role in the Oscar-winning epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Woo said he would then shoot a romantic comedy about two thieves who fall for the same woman. He also plans to film a western and another action movie with singing and dancing. Woo is in Hong Kong to promote his latest release, Windtalkers, which opens in Hong Kong on June 27. The film, starring Cage, is a tale of the Navajo code breakers during World War II. In the United States, box-office receipts for the movie have been below expectations.

"The Who: The Movie has a certain ring to it. It would open the door for some of the biggest names in Hollywood to try their hand at emulating Daltrey and co," said Cage.

Nic Cage Dreams of Being in Military
    6/6/2002
A serious movie brings serious talk. Nicolas Cage, Christian Slater, Adam Beach and Noah Emmerich marched into the nation's capital Wednesday night for the premiere of their new movie, "Windtalkers," a WWII drama inspired by the real-life story of Navajo Marines who used their native language to develop a secret military code that helped the Allies defeat the Japanese. At the post-screening party, reports PEOPLE, the commander-in-chief of Veterans of Foreign Wars, James Goldsmith, presented Cage, 38, with a plaque recognizing his role in publicizing the Navajo contribution to our victory. Speaking to PEOPLE, the star had an interesting take on the military. "I've often thought later in my life I would like to try going through boot camp, because I've always seen it as sorta a vacation from ourselves. You don't have to think about whatever is on your mind. You can just let someone else tell you what to do," he said. And could he have performed as admirably as the highly decorated Marine sergeant he plays in the movie ? "I like to think that I would have stepped up to the plate and been heroic," he told PEOPLE. "But I'll never really know because I've never been in a situation like that. But at least I know that I would try to do my best."

    Cage: 'Windtalkers' Teaches Heroism
    6/5/02
WASHINGTON (AP) - Nicolas Cage says when he read the script for his new movie "Windtalkers," he knew little about the Navajo Indian Code Talkers who created the Marines' unbreakable code used in World War II's Pacific front.

Cage, co-star Adam Beach and director John Woo joined several surviving Code Talkers — including four who developed the code — and about a dozen senators at the reception. "The recognition they're given now is richly deserved and long overdue," said Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, R-Colo., the only American Indian in the Senate. The Code Talkers created a code based on the Navajo language. It was used in World War II's fiercest battles, including Iwo Jima, and was never cracked.

"It's going to be an education for the general public. A lot of people don't know about" the Code Talkers, said Sam Billison, 77, of Window Rock, Ariz. "The movie and the story will create some kind of legacy for people to remember."

Sony offers new life for 'Ghost Rider'
    05/22/02
At Dimension, Steve Norrington and Nicolas Cage were attached to direct and star in the film, respectively. Both are no longer involved, though Columbia and Marvel hope that Cage will still be interested to play the title role of a former motorcycle stuntman who agrees to let his body become host to a vengeful spirit in exchange for the safety of his true love. The price he pays is that at night he is transformed into Ghost Rider, a bike-riding demon with a flaming skull. As his alter ego, he avenges souls tarnished by evil.

    Nicolas Cage
    05/03/02
Oscar winner Nicolas Cage has another trophy for his mantle, as he became the very first inductee into the Italian American hall of fame. So why is Nicolas Cage getting this award from the National Italian American Foundation? Well, his real last name just so happens to be Coppola, as in nephew of famed movie director Francis Ford Coppola. He says, “I never really changed my name legally, so I am still Nicolas Coppola.” Twenty years and over 35 movies after his big screen debut in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High," Cage recently purchased a huge home in New Orleans just so he could turn it into a movie set for his directorial debut. He says, “I actually bought the house there as a means to shoot the movie. I put all the sets in the house and I had more control that way.” And it wasn't just Nic's night. Oscar winning director Ron Howard presented Garry Marshall with a career achievement award. We learned that long before "Happy Days," Garry Marshall was Garry Marsharelli. That served as the inspiration for The Fonz. Garry says, “Originally he was called Arthur Marsharelli and the nickname was Mash. But there was already a TV show and we ended up changing it to Fonzarelli.”

Who Are the Men of Destiny?
    03/25/02
IGN FilmForce has learned that another John Woo veteran may co-star with Chow Yun-Fat in Woo's next project.

IGN FilmForce has gleaned some juicy new tidbits about director John Woo's next film, Men of Destiny, from a trusted friend in Tinseltown. Destiny, which is set against the construction of the railroad in the Old West, will reunite Woo with Chow Yun-Fat, the star of Woo's most popular Hong Kong-era films. IGN FilmForce broke the story of a Woo/Yun-Fat reunion last summer, with the industry trades confirming our exclusive months later. This same source has now informed FilmForce that yet another Woo veteran may be reteaming with the acclaimed filmmaker for Men of Destiny.

According to our Tinseltown friend, Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage is mulling the other male lead opposite Chow Yun-Fat. Cage's role is described as that of an Irishman who works on the railroad alongside Chow Yun-Fat's immigrant protagonist. Cage starred in Woo's action flick Face/Off as well as in the upcoming WWII drama Windtalkers (currently scheduled for release on June 14, 2002).

Production on Men of Destiny is expected to begin this fall.
