    Liberace
NICOLAS CAGE will play flamboyant Las Vegas, Nevada showman LIBERACE in a new biopic about the legendary piano man's life. The CON AIR star is producing the project, as well as starring in the film, and will begin meeting with directors in the coming weeks. Liberace, real name WLADZIU VALENTINO LIBERACE, rose to fame in the 1950s when his musical TV show competed with, and often beat, I LOVE LUCY in the ratings. For much of the 1960s and 1970s, he was Las Vegas' highest-paid performer. Liberace always flatly denied he was gay and the film is expected to focus on his double-life, according to celebrity website TMZ.com. In the early 1980s, Liberace's live-in lover SCOTT THORNSON sued him for $113 million (GBP63 million) in "palimony" after they parted ways. Sources say the suit, which was ultimately dismissed, will be used as the starting point to introduce audiences to the alleged secret that haunted him for his entire adult life. The film could start production as early as October (06).

He has written several episodes of the eccentric sitcom "Seinfeld", and the upcoming Adam Sandler vehicle Click.

The project will be produced by Saturn Films' partners Nicolas Cage and Norm Golightly, alongside WAM Films' Alain Chabat and Stephanie Danan. The story is about a glib man who discovers he only has 1,000 words left to utter before he dies. Let's hope he saves the best speeches for last.

    Blackthorne is Dresden
The Sci Fi Channel has announced that Paul Blackthorne has been cast as Harry Dresden in the network’s upcoming TV movie The Dresden Files. Helmer David Carson (who played in the majors briefly as the director of the theatrical film Star Trek: Generations) will steer the project, which is a two-hour “backdoor pilot” for the cable net, meaning if the segment does well enough, it maybe be turned into a series.

The British Blackthorne is best known for his work on 24 and Presidio Med. Based on the series of novels by Jim Butcher, The Dresden Files is the story of Harry Dresden, a Chicago private dick who’s also a wizard – and who, of course, uses his powers to fight the supernatural evils of the world. Lions Gate Television and Nicolas Cage’s Saturn Films are producing the pilot, with Hans Beimler and Robert Wolfe (both Star Trek vets too) executive producing. Production begins later this month in Toronto, with a Summer 2006 premiere planned.

    Iron Man

Lou Zamperinis 'Iron Man' Gets A ReWrite
Neil Tolkin is negotiating to rewrite "Iron Man," Universal's biopic about Olympian athlete and track star Lou Zamperini, reports Variety He earned his nickname by withstanding the cruel torture of a Japanese POW guard during two years of internment during WWII. Universal drafted Tolkin because the studio is high on his screenwriting work on "The Emperor's Club," which opens Friday. Nicolas Cage has pined to star in the film, and directors including Antoine Fuqua have circled it.

Tolkin, in fact, tried to buy the rights when the world was alerted to Zamperini's story during a feature that was broadcast during the 1998 Winter Olympics, when Zamperini was invited to carry the torch for the U.S. in Nagano. Zamperini was a track star who appeared in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. He was in the Army Air Force when his plane crashed in the Pacific. He and another soldier survived with virtually no food and water for 47 days, only to land on a Japanese island and be taken prisoner. Zamperini was targeted by a cruel guard, who tortured and humiliated the athlete but could never break his spirit. Zamperini said during that broadcast that he had forgiven his captors. The network had actually tracked down his main tormentor, who declined an offer for a reunion with the willing Zamperini. Zamperini will be in the news again next year, when William Morrow publishes "Devil at My Heels," a memoir he wrote with David Rensin.

    Sympathy for Delicious
Mark Ruffalo (Windtalkers) ready to direct. Ruffalo will make his directorial debut with "Sympathy for Delicious," a project that he'll start shooting in March in Los Angeles. He described the movie as being "about a guy in a wheelchair who gets the gift to heal but can't heal himself."

The character starts a "heal-a-palooza" in a quest for fame and fortune, but finds compassion in the end, Ruffalo said. "It's a rise and fall movie, very funny and quirky,"” he said. Killer Films and Saturn Films are producing, and Nicolas Cage will star as the Jesuit priest opposite the healer. (Ruffalo says he won't be acting in this one). On the prospect of directing his first film (he has directed some theater before), the actor admitted to being "really nervous." But he added, "It's where I'd like to branch out to."
